Children develop their cognitive and social skills through playtime, and the early development of hand-eye coordination has been found to establish the basis for reading and writing. Hand-eye coordination is the ability to translate visual information to guide your hands to perform a given task like catching a ball or writing. Development of this ability starts in infants tracking objects with their eyes and continues through childhood, most notably in playtime.

Children that strengthen their hand-eye coordination early are found to develop their reading and writing skills quicker; they can track words on a page without losing their place and manipulate a pencil to translate letters to the page with more ease. Hand-eye coordination develops along with fine motor skills from being able to pick up a block to hitting a baseball, children learn these skills as they grow.

Infant to Toddler

In these early years, children develop cognitive recognition and the beginning of basic, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
